Centre of Excellence in Data Science & AI

A collaborative research initiative between TIET and UQ, advancing data science and AI through cross-disciplinary research and innovation.

The TIET-UQ Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI is a cross-disciplinary research centre that advances foundational and applied research related to data science and AI, jointly located at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology in Patiala, India, and The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The work of the centre crosses both national boundaries (India and Australia) and disciplinary boundaries (computer science, engineering, behavioural science, health, agriculture and environment). Through this unique collaboration, we aim to develop innovative solutions for complex global challenges while fostering knowledge exchange between two leading institutions.

Joint Director

Dr. Inderveer Channa

Professor of Computer Science, TIET

Dr. Inderveer Channa is the Joint Director for the Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI. She is the Professor of Computer Science in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at TIET, Patiala. Her research interests include Cloud computing, Energy aware computing and Machine Learning. She has more than 100 research publications in reputed Journals and Conferences. She has also worked on major research projects sponsored by Govt. funding agencies like UGC, AICTE, CSIR, DST, ICMR etc.

Joint Director & Chair Professor

Dr. Tim Miller

Professor of Artificial Intelligence, UQ

Dr. Tim Miller is the Joint Director & Chair Professor for the Centre of Excellence, TIET-UQ . He is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Queensland. Tim's research draws on machine learning, reinforcement learning, AI planning, interaction design, and cognitive science, to help people to make better decisions. He has done work on areas including explainable AI, human-AI mixed-initiative planning, and human-centered decision support.

Coordinator - Research and Innovation

Dr. Sachin Kansal

Associate Professor, TIET

Dr. Sachin Kansal is the Coordinator (Research and Innovation) for the Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at TIET, Patiala. He is an expert in robotics, with a research focus on advanced automation, human-robot interaction, and AI-driven systems. He has authored numerous research publications in reputed journals and conferences and has actively collaborated on major research projects funded by government agencies such as DST, SERB, MeitY.

At DSAI, we foster interdisciplinary research and innovation that bridges academia and industry, empowering the next generation of AI-driven technologies and real-world impact.

Coordinator - Education and Training

Dr. Anju Bala

Professor, TIET

Dr. Anju Bala is the Coordinator (Education and Training) for the Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI. She is an Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at TIET, Patiala. She is an expert in Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing. She has authored numerous research publications in reputed journals and conferences and has actively collaborated on major research projects funded by government agencies such as DST, MeitY.

We facilitate student engagement with CoDSAI's research and innovation ecosystem through internships, projects, workshops, hackathons, and mentorship, fostering research aptitude and leadership.
